The kitchen is the center of the house. It is where the family gets nourished and gets re-energized. The kitchen is more than a food factory. Dreams are born, successes are celebrated, comfort is given and broken hearts are mended.

I don’t know about your kitchen, but ours even though small, is always busy. The stove is always on, with something cooking. My family enjoys coming in the kitchen, and before you know it, there is almost three conversations going on simultaneously. I love to cook and I am always cooking. Our two daughters are following suit with our son showing interest as well in developing some culinary skills. So it’s easy with time to have grease build up, crusty pots and pans not to mention the build up in the oven.

My youngest daughter showed me a nice life hack for cleaning grease build up using baking soda or vinegar. This is for stubborn grease build up otherwise just warm soapy water would do wonders especially right after a grease splatter occurs. Mix I cup each of water and baking soda into a paste and apply on the surface let sit until dry then wipe off. You can use the same measurements using vinegar and put in a spritz bottle. Just be careful not to use on surfaces such as marble.

Our hearts are like the kitchen to a home. It is where all the action is born before it can be exteriorized. Even though we may not see with the physical eye, a lot is happening inside one’s heart. In the same way as in the kitchen, grit, grease and grime can easily accumulate and cling to our hearts. This can be in the form of hatred, envy, unforgiveness, jealousy etc. The Bible admonishes us the importance of guarding our hearts, in Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Everything we do is fed from the heart. Like the kitchen, it is in the heart that we prepare food that feeds everything we do from mending our brokenness to turning our dreams into great accomplishments. Everything we do starts from the heart.

As we clean the grime from our kitchens, let us get rid of all the grit that has accumulated in our heart over time and carefully guard it from any future build up.
