History is in the making right now as the whole world is feeling the blows of the Corona Virus pandemic. Is calmness something that can be envisioned at this present time? Nations are crumbling at the mercies of this deadly virus as it ravages not only lives but also livelihood. The whole world has been brought to a sudden halt and the once bustling streets are now dead silent. Homes have taken captive their owners, as everyone is adhering to instructions of staying home and social distancing.

As a mother, my children are looking up to me on how I will react in front of this situation. How can I model calmness to them in these stressful times? For me, it is acknowledging the seriousness of this issue and stressing to them the importance of respecting what the authorities are saying to keeping them safe. However, at no instance do I portray fear or support its promotion. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7 that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and of a sound mind.  A spirit of power allows us to fight through this crisis, of love by praying with compassion for those affected as well as our first responders , and of sound mind to think soberly not putting ourselves at risk.

Activity Ideas

One of the things that works greatly is turning the current situation into a positive one by creating wonderful memories. Here are ideas of activities:  trying out new recipes, creating a gratitude journal where you record one or two things you are grateful for this week, playing board games and much more. Let your imagination run wild depending on your personality and that of your children!

For those in confinement alone, God repeatedly tells in the Bible not to be afraid but to trust in Him. Trusting in God is knowing no matter what is going on around the world, God is in control and we are in perfect peace. We may feel worn out from hearing bad news, yet there is so much comfort in these words spoken by Jesus in Matt 11:28: “come to me all who are weary and heavily burdened and I will give you rest”. You can look for opportunities to help others and connect with people you haven’t been able to in a long time.

Final Thought

The situation may be grim with many unanswered questions, yet you can count on peaceful rest in the comfort of God’s arms. Let us show compassion to each other during this time, as this will bring greater healing to humanity than any vaccine!
