Back to school can be daunting to both the child and parent. Stores are bustling with parents scavenging through the isles looking for school supplies that they wish their supply list came with photos of the items as they don’t have a clue what some of the items are or look like.
For those first timer parents that your child is either going for the first time to the big school (elementary school), 7th grade, college or university (especially out-of-town) here are 5 tips to ensure a smooth transition for both your child and yourself:
- Take the day off: If possible the first day of school, either take a few hours or the full day off. This allows you to start the school year stress free as you have time to run your child through what will be their routine. This could be what time they need to get up, walk them to their bus stop or take care of any last-minute issues that may arise. For older children accompanying them on their first day can relieve some stress as well.
- Be excited for your child. Talk positively about the upcoming change and how important it is as they are entering a new phase. Explain to them it’s like a promotion at work. They get to learn new stuff and new responsibilities.
- Empower your child: Most children may be afraid and feel anxious for various reasons. Even though some of their fears may seem frivolous don’t dismiss them, rather validate them; explaining it is normal to be afraid of the unknown. Talk of your child’s unique qualities and how many other kids would love to be his/her friend once they get to know him/her. Encourage him/her to be friendly as this invites others to reciprocate with friendliness. The Bible says in Proverbs 18:24a A man who has friends must show himself friendly…
- Use this as a learning opportunity: Regardless of what age your child is at, you can remind him/her of the privilege of getting an education, when there are millions of children in other parts of the world who would love to learn but they don’t have access to education. This keeps them humble and grateful for what they have.
- Believe in your child: Children become invincible when they know their parents believe in them. They suddenly soar to great heights. A great part of who I am as a person today is from what my parents taught me whether good or bad. For the parents whose child is going to out-of-town learning, affirm to him/her that you believe in him/her to be capable and succeed even being far from home. Assure them of your support. Your child will believe he/she is mature enough to make the right decisions while far from home without always relying on your guidance.
May this school year be a successful one to both you and your child as you discover new paths of life. Knowledge is power as the Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needed not be ashamed, rightly diving the word of truth.
